We came home, last night, after a full day of activities with our church. So, I thought I'd try to get the kids into bed as quickly as possible. But then the littlest member of our family piped up, "We haven't had family worship yet!" In my head I am thinking, "We've been worshiping all day and Mama's tired!" But, in my heart I knew nothing really replaces the intimate time we share, worshiping as a family. Sometimes my kids have to set me straight. I'm so happy they do!
A few months ago, I shared this photo of a book entitled "Family Worship".
It's a quick read that outlines what a basic Family Worship looks like, as well as some testimonials from families who have made Family Worship a part of their daily/weekly routine. Now, I will be the first to admit that we do, in fact, miss many days. Late sports practices and homework assignments sometime distract us. But just spending five or ten minutes together, at the end of the day, focusing on Christ and gratefulness truly helps us to grow closer as a family and helps prepare our hearts for the next day.
Some of you have asked about our routine, so I thought I'd give you a quick run down of how we do Family Worship. I know it is easy to feel intimidated if you have never lead your family, in this way. But it really is simple, and your children are usually very graceful. When Cory is home, he leads us. And when he is away, I take the lead.
Here it is in five easy steps:
1. Open up in prayer, ask God to teach us through His Word and give us understanding.
2. Read a scripture passage. We have a Family Bible that is very simple to read, it breaks the stories/passages up for us, so we just read them in order. We started in the New Testament because it was close to Christmas time. Sometimes the kids volunteer to read as well, which is great!
3. We have a short discussion about the passage we read. Kids ask great questions!
4. We have YouTube Worship! The kids love it. They take turns choosing a song each day. YouTube worship works well because you can find videos with lyrics. Often the kids will ask if we can pause the song, because they have a question about the lyrics, which leads to an even better understanding; something they wouldn't have the opportunity to do in congregational worship.
5. We ask what they are thankful for, if there is something they want to ask God's forgiveness for, and if they have any specific prayer requests for themselves or others. Then we close in prayer.
That's it! Nothing too complicated or time-consuming. Just a sweet time to slow down together and focus on what is most important. Let me know if you give it a try! <3
